( Originally Published Early 1900's ) This hardy little onion-like plant grows in thick tufts from small oval bulbs, scarcely larger than a hazel nut. The hollow, abundant grasslike leaves are used for seasoning soups, stews, salads, etc. The plants are propagated by dividing the tufts and planting them in ordinary garden soil. Chives are often used for edging beds, partly because of their pretty green leaves and also because their purplish flowers are very attractive in the late spring or early summer. |
