( Originally Published 1932 ) Old Fort Boykin, owned by Mrs. Herbert Greer, and located on the James River near Mogart's Beach about five miles from Smithfield, is one of the show places of Eastern Virginia. The old fortress, which was built in 1812 in the form of a seven-pointed star, has been peserved. The estate, comprising five acres, includes grass-covered hills, shady dells, gardens which are ever blooming, and a wild-flower garden such as is to be found nowhere else in this section. Giant trees, which include black walnut, mulberry, live oak and tulip poplar, have been preserved as living monuments. Another spot of beauty in the grounds of the old fort is the water garden with rustic bridges and many varieties of wild iris, water plants and grasses. The fort is said to be the best preserved example of fortifications of the period of 1812 in America. It was also used during the War Between the States. |
