Pohick Church

( Originally Published 1932 )

This Church, one of the oldest in Virginia, is filled with associations of the people whose names are closely allied with the early history of the State. It is situated twenty miles from Washington and a short distance from Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall, whose owners, George Washington and George Mason respectively, were regular attendants at services there.

Pohick Church was built in 1769, and George Washington is said to have been largely responsible for the design and general plan. He and his brother Augustine were vestrymen there, and their friend George William Fairfax was a warden.

It was damaged during the War Between the States by Federal troops. When the regents of Mount Vernon hold their May meeting at Washington's home, they always attend service in Old Pohick Church.
