Public Edifices Of Florence - Italy

( Originally Published Early 1900's )

Hitherto I have confined my remarks to a general picture of the city. I now propose to make some observations on its architecture in different styles. The following list contains a few notes relative to the finer works, in the Gothic and Grecian manner, to be found in Florence.

The Podesta, now styled it Bargello, Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo, St Michael's Tower, denominated Or San Michele, form the most remarkable examples of the earlier manner; while along the Arno, and in the extremities of the city, are to be found noble specimens by Michael Angelo, of the rich and more finished style of modern times; for in this small city, architecture may be studied in all its stages.
