Flemish decorative painter, active in Florence. Born in Bruges, Candid went to Italy where he was associated with Vasari in work for the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He collaborated in painting the Sala Regia of the Vatican and the dome of the Cathedral of Florence. He also worked in Munich. Cano, Alonso Referring to the rule of the Emperor Chararchitect. This universal man, arrogant in his relations with others, led a stormy life. As a painter he was of great merit, although less influential than as a sculptor. He was born in Granada and was trained there by his father, a sculptor. They moved to Seville in 1614 where he studied painting with Pacheco, Herrera and Juan del Castillo; and sculpture with Montanes. He then practiced a lucid, sculpturesque style not unlike that of his enemy Zurbaran, e.g., S. Ines (Berlin). In 1638, as a result of a duel, he fled to Madrid where he was introduced to the court by his fellow student, Velazquez. Here he was employed as a restorer of the royal collection of Titian and Rubens paintings. His study of these and of the van Dycks lent a strong Flemish flavor to his own style, as can be seen in his Virgin and Child (Prado) and in his three portraits of former kings (Prado). The mysterious death of his wife in 1644 brought about his arrest by the Inquisition and Cano fled to Valencia where he painted for the Chartreuse. During 1624-64 he was occupied at Granada Cathedral where, after a ten-year dispute with the clergy, he was granted an intendancy. During this period Ire also again received royal commissions in Madrid. His chief work in Granada, where he had finally settled, is the cycle of The Joys of Mary (in the Cathedral). His late style rises on occasion to the dreamy exuberance of Murillo Cantarini, Simone (called Simone da Pesaro, Il Pesarese) (1612-48). Italian painter and etcher born in Oropezza. He was an imitator of Guidu Reni (see) with whom he worked in Bologna. After studying Raphael in Rome he was in the service of the Duke of Mantua, but most of his activity was in Verona and the Marches.
