UNDER-BRACE: Another name for stretcher (q.v.) on furniture. URN: Ornament used in the 18th century as a finish to a pediment, with the broken arch, or for inlay on surface of furniture. Knife boxes in urn form were also made. It is a characteristic of the Adam style. URN STAND: A small tea table of the 18th century, usually on four tapering legs. Some were made with a small slide beneath the top, on which to rest the tea-pot when the slide is drawn out. |
